The Epochalypse: Preparing for the Next Time Rollovers

Reliable time helps digital systems coordinate transactions, validate credentials, and keep accurate records.

Between 2036 and 2038, several widely used time representations will reach rollover points, including those used by the Network Time Protocol (NTP), older Unix time formats, and some GPS systems.

These transitions, often discussed together as the “Epochalypse”, can cause affected systems to misinterpret dates or malfunction unless they handle the rollover correctly.

Preparation starts now: organizations need time to identify vulnerable components, test their systems, and update or replace equipment that may remain in service for decades.

Network Time Foundation supports the NTP Project and other open-source timekeeping software. Sustaining this shared infrastructure—and the expertise behind it—is essential for keeping systems dependable through these transitions and beyond.
